fabric 1Fabric 1:  Cut 1 strip 1¾ inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 quarter square triangles using a quarter square triangle ruler.
Cut 1 strip 3 inches wide. Subcut strip into 4 half square triangles using a half square triangle ruler.

Half Square Triangle

Half Square Triangle instructions

  1. Match Fabric 1 half square triangle with a Fabric 2 half square triangle right sides together.
  2. Sew a ¼ inch seam on long side of right triangle pair.
  3. Press seam to one side.
  4. Repeat with a Fabric 1 and Fabric 3 half square triangles.

Make 2 of each fabric combination.

Tri Square Triangle

Tri Square Triangle instructions

  1. Match up a Fabric 1 quarter square triangle with a Fabric 2 quarter square triangle right sides together with long side toward the top and Fabric 2 on top.
  2. Sew a ¼ inch seam on right short side of triangle pair.
  3. Press seam to one side.
  4. Match previously sewn quarter square triangles to Fabric 3 half square triangle right sides together.
  5. Sew a ¼ inch seam on long side of triangles.
  6. Press seams toward half square triangle.
  7. Repeat using Fabric 1 and 3 quarter square triangles with Fabric 2 half square triangles.

Make 2 of each fabric combination.

Quarter Square Triangle

Quarter Square Triangle instructions

  1. Match a Fabric 2 and 3 quarter square triangle right sides together with Fabric 3 on top and long side of triangle down.
  2. Sew a ¼ inch seam on right short side of triangle pair.
  3. Sew 2 pair for each block.
  4. Press seams toward Fabric 2.
  5. Match triangle pairs right sides together with opposite fabrics on top of each other.
  6. Sew a ¼ inch seam on long side of triangles.
  7. Press seam to one side.

Layout each Card Tricks block units as shown and chain piece together first rows, then columns using a ¼ inch seam.

Quilt Sandwich & Quilting

Quilt Sandwich & Quilting instructions

  1. Place pressed backing right side down on a flat surface large enough to lay flat
  2. Tape in place at sides, then corners.
  3. Lay 2 to 4 layers of batting on top of backing and smooth wrinkles
  4. Tape in place at sides, then corners.
  5. Put pressed quilt on top right side up.
  6. Smooth borders and blocks square, pushing excess toward middle. Quilting will take up slack and quilt will be square.
  7. Pin baste 3 to 4 inches apart.
  8. Quilt as desired using a walking foot. Adjust presser foot pressure to accomodate quilt thickness to prevent backing from sliding while quilting.
Binding

Binding instructions

  1. If the number of binding strips are greater than 1, sew strips together by laying ends right sides together forming an L.
  2. Sew on diagonal where fabrics cross from upper left to lower right.
  3. Trim excess to 1/4 inch.
  4. Repeat to make a continuous strip; press seams open.
  5. Fold and press strip lengthwise in half wrong sides together.
  6. Leaving a 5 inch tail, sew binding to quilt top matching raw edges with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
  7. Stop 1/4 inch before corner with needle down.
  8. Pivot work as if to sew next side and reverse sew off quilt top.
  9. Fold binding back, creating a 45 degree fold, then fold forward matching fold to previously sewn side.
  10. Continue sewing binding, and repeat above for each corner.
  11. Stop sewing approximately 5 inches from beginning.
  12. Unfold and overlap ends.
  13. Cut at an approximate 45 degree angle somewhere where both ends overlap.
  14. Match ends wrong sides together, leaving equal dog ears.
  15. Sew together with a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
  16. Refold binding and finish sewing to quilt.
  17. Fold binding to back and handstitch to finish using a blind stitch.
